Speech bubbleWhat am I doing for others?

I am contributing – and have contributed – my high-energy approach, and my strategy and management experience in a variety of situations. These include the roles and projects detailed below.

Current projects and roles

Green Construction Board

The Department for Business Innovation and Skills’ Green Construction Board was established to grasp the opportunities for growth presented by the sustainable construction, infrastructure and property sectors. The Board is focused on taking a unified approach to the problems facing the industry, providing strategic leadership on key issues and identifying steps to promote the UK's excellence in green construction. I’m a member of the board’s Knowledge and Skills Working Group and Chair of the K&S Strategy Group.

Green Gauge Trust

The Green Gauge Trust was established to mainstream the knowledge and skills for cost-effective low energy, low carbon buildings in the UK. Under its Green Stripes banner, we are providing training and certification to anyone aiming to contribute to the delivery of low energy sustainable buildings – and wanting to exploit the market.

National Energy Foundation

I’m a Trustee and member of the Management Committee of the National Energy Foundation, an educational charity whose new mission statement is ‘improving the use of energy in buildings’.  NEF will be celebrating its 25th birthday in 2013 with a clutch of policies and programmes that will really make a difference.

Octavia Housing

I’m a member of the Development Panel at Octavia Housing, a forward thinking, not-for-profit organisation involved in social housing in central London.

SuperHomes is a rapidly expanding network of over 100 energy aware households that are redefining green living. All are homes that have been refurbished to the highest standards of energy efficiency, and are at least 60% less reliant on fossil fuels. As a Trustee of SuperHomes, I’m involved in developing an ‘MPG for buildings’ – a coherent measure that will allow the energy efficiency of one home to be accurately compared with that of another.

Past projects

Technology Strategy Board

The vision of the Technology Strategy Board is for the UK to be a global leader in innovation and a magnet for innovative businesses, where technology is applied rapidly, effectively and sustainably to create wealth and enhance quality of life. One of the Board’s areas of focus is a low impact built environment, and as well as other activities in this area, it runs competitions for funding of low-carbon building projects. I helped with the design of the Retrofit for the Future and Building Performance Evaluation competitions and have worked as an Assessor on these and several others.

AECB and the Passivhaus Trust

From 2004-2009, I was Director of the AECB’s CarbonLite Programme, a step-by-step approach to creating and using buildings with low energy use and low carbon emissions. The programme supports and complements the principles of the Passivhaus standard, the world’s leading international low energy, design standard. I was involved with setting up what is now the Passivhaus Trust, an independent, non-profit organisation that provides leadership in the UK for the adoption of the Passivhaus standard and methodology.
